Why Use Dutch Oven Liners?

Some campers who love dutch oven cooking still have no idea what dutch oven liners are, or why they should be used.  I'm going to go briefly into the reasons why these items are useful, how they work, and where you can find them.

First, what are dutch oven liners?  That's very simple.  These are aluminum “tins” that are designed to fit perfectly inside your dutch oven.  They come in all the sizes that dutch ovens come in, and they're designed to slip easily in and out of your dutch oven.  These are disposable items, though you can clean them and re-use them if you really want to.

So why use dutch oven liners?  Well, as anyone who's done a lot of dutch oven cooking knows, cleaning a dutch oven can be a pain.  It takes a while to do, and eventually you're going to have to re-season the entire dutch oven, which is a time consuming process.  It also means that, for large meals, you have to have a lot of dutch ovens on hand because there's just not time to clean one out in the middle of meal preparation.  This is the biggest advantage of dutch oven liners.  You just cook the food in the tin, pull it out when you're done, and can immediately re-use the dutch oven.  This also means you don't have to bring so many dutch ovens on the trip.

In addition, the fact that dutch oven liners are aluminum that you're putting inside cast iron gives you the advantages of both.  You'll get the even, steady cooking of cast iron, and the easy to remove and handle, quickly cooling aluminum.  Dutch oven liners can be found online, and they're usually a couple of dollars each.  In camping stores they are a bit more but can still be found.
