What to Look for in Cast Iron Pot Sets

If you're buying cast iron pot sets then you're not making just a small investment.  The entire idea behind this purchase is that you won't have to get anything else for your cast iron collection for a long, long time!  But what, exactly, do you need in your cast iron cooking set?  Let's look at the different options here.

First question first.  Are you looking for cast iron pot sets for your kitchen or your campground?  The tools you'll need are very different depending on which one you're looking at.  Not only are the additions going to be more or less useful, depending on context, but the dutch ovens themselves will be crafted differently.  Cast iron pot sets for the campground will have legs on the bottom of the pots, and won't have some extras that can only really be used inside ovens.

Many of the kitchen varieties have some great stove top cookers and platters or cooking containers that you can use inside your oven, with dutch oven (like) effects.  These are great additions if you're looking to bring a bit of campground taste indoors.  They also have options in colorful enamels so you're not stuck with just black dutch ovens at home.

Classic cast iron pot sets are going to be somewhat more simplified.  A lot of these additions simply aren't useful in campgrounds.  Enamel?  How silly.  Things to use on your stove top?  Really?  What stove top?  You'll usually just want sets of dutch ovens of different sizes, including pan-like dutch ovens for use with your breakfast.
