Types of Griddles

There are a few major options for griddles, and the different options will be better depending on your price range, whether you're using it at home or for camping, and the sort of meals you're intending to cook.  Let's take a quick look at the types of griddles that you'll find on the market today.

The first is the classic griddle.  Usually made of cast iron, the typical griddles you'll see are designed to be put on top of a fire or set of coals (or, at worst case scenario, on top of a grill).  They heat evenly, they're great for cooking most griddle foods, and the seasoned material can add some flavor or texture of your choice.  It's a bit heavier, and that plus the fact it retains heat makes it a bit harder to move around.

One other major option are electric griddles.  This is definitely great at home, or if you're using an electric generator or have some other electricity access in your campground.  You plug these griddles in and they will quickly heat up in a controlled manner.  You can cook anything you need on these, and while they're a bit more pricey, they're easy to transport and they're reliable.  This is generally the fastest way to get your meal.

At home, items like George Foreman griddles or Cuisinart griddles are good items to have.  Some are designed to do things like drain off extra fat and oil, while others simply brag that they can cook the top and bottom of an item at the same time.  This usually isn't the option for those cooking outdoors, or for those serving large groups at once, but these griddles should also not be discounted.
