When you are cooking with your Dutch oven, you will find that when you are cleaning them, it can actually be quite the task. However, with that said, the clean-up and maintenance required for Dutch oven cooking is well worth the effort! Especially since there are so many different tasty meals that can be cooked in your Dutch oven both at home and while you are camping!

Dutch oven cleaning and maintenance is an important step in owning a Dutch oven. However, just because you own a Dutch oven, doesn’t mean you know the proper way to clean and maintain your handy little kitchen staple. Fortunately, we have offered a brief list of the must-do’s in keeping your Dutch oven clean and ready to cook!

  • First and foremost you should try not to allow your Dutch oven to get too hot. If you need, pour a few inches into your oven to keep it from over-heating and burning.
  • Put your lid on the oven while cooking.
  • Remove it from the heat to let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Scrape any left-over food from your Dutch oven after it has cooled.
  • Discard any dirty water
  • Thoroughly dry your Dutch oven and hang it over or near by a fire to help season your Dutch oven.
  • Once it has been cooled, you will rub a small amount of oil on the inside and outside of your Dutch oven.
  • Wipe off any excess oil that remains on your Dutch oven.
