Constructing Basic Fire Pits

At home fire pits are a fun way to spend both your mechanical and creative energies.  Home fire pits can be one of the easier to make, but most useful, additions to your back yard.  These skills are also great for any long term camp sites.  Here are some basic tips on creating fire pits for your yard.

First and foremost, you want to be sure to choose a safe area to make the fire pit.  We don't expect that you're going to be stupid enough to try to make a ten foot flame, but with fuel accelerants, accidents do happen.  Don't build it around anything flammable, and don't build it underneath anything flammable either.  Fire pits are a safety hazard unless you take the correct precautions.

Once you've done that, you'll want to dig a hole in the ground.  Fire pits work best once you've dug past the top layer of soil, and the top layer of soil can also have flammable materials in the form of organic parts of the soil itself.  Just dig a few inches until you get to the dark soil.  Now you're ready to start laying your actual fire pit.

Fire pits require a height that doesn't constrict the fire too much while still allowing for effective cooking of whatever is on the grill.  Aim for one or two feet.  Simply stacking bricks (or, if you're lucky enough to find the right rocks, then use those) layer upon layer is the best way to start.  Lay down your grill on the second to last layer and then lay down the last layer.  A couple of feet to three and a half feet are usually about right, but experiment!  See, making fire pits is easy.  Have fun in your project!
