When you enjoy cleaning with your Dutch oven, you will find that on occasion you will be met with a few patches of rust here or there. While you may think that the only thing to do is to purchase a new Dutch oven, don’t! There are many different ways to clean your rusty Dutch oven, so that you can you’re your Dutch oven many times over.

Cleaning a rusty Dutch oven, while it may seem hard to do, is actually fairly simple! However, you may be at a loss as to what to do, this is why we have compiled the steps that you will need to follow in order to get your rusty Dutch oven clean.

The steps in cleaning a rusty Dutch oven are:

  • Scrape off what rust you can off. You can use a food scraper, butter knife, putty knife, or anything that you can get your hands on!
  • Once you have gotten all of the large rust spots out of your Dutch oven, it is now time to burn off those stubborn rust stains. First and foremost, you can use your propane grill or even turn it over on a fire to heat up the rust.
  • Once you have burned it off, allow it to cool down! This is an important step as you don’t want any unnecessary burns!
  • Now, you can scrape off the remaining rust from your Dutch oven with that same handy scraper that you used in step one.
  • Now, once you have done that, you will then take steel wool and water to scrub everything off of the metal of your Dutch oven.
