Buying Dutch Ovens

When you're looking at buying the first of your dutch ovens, the different options available on the market can be a bit overwhelming.  This is an important investment when you're getting into dutch oven cooking, so you'll definitely want to think it through!  Here are a few beginner tips to help you get going.

One of the first things to look out for with dutch ovens is that the lower quality version potentially have differences in thickness.  The different levels of thickness around the dutch oven can lead to differences in heat in the areas, and is also a sign of poor craftsmanship and an item that won't last as long as other, higher quality options.

Now, you're going to have to choose between two major types of dutch ovens.  One is the “camping oven,” which is the sort you'll want (obviously) when you go camping.  It has three legs on the bottom and usually have a special ridge on the top for coals.  The other option consists of different kitchen dutch ovens which are meant to be used on the stove top.  Either one of these items will be made of heavy and durable cast iron.  Don't you dare buy a “dutch oven” that's not made of cast iron!  Beyond that, just be sure to choose the right one for your needs!

You will need to be sure that you choose dutch ovens that are right for the size of items that you're going to be cooking, in addition to having legs that put it the correct height above the fireplace.  For this, consult the recipes that you're intending to cook.  Don't go for cheap dutch ovens, since you'll notice it every time you cook in them!
