Buying Dutch Oven Lifters

Ah, the joys of cooking with dutch ovens.  There are a lot of things I love about this method of cooking, especially when I'm out camping.  There's a certain flavor in the cooking that's just superb, it all cooks so evenly, and to me it's always felt a bit “mountain man.”  Most of these things are things we can thank cast iron for.  Cast iron is a great material, and it retains even heat and has the seasonable, porous texture.  Unfortunately, it retains heat, and that makes it hard to check up on your food or get the dutch oven out of the fire.  That's why dutch oven lifters are out there, and a part of every dutch oven aficionado's tool kit.

There are a lot of options when it comes to buying dutch oven lifters.  We have our lid lifters that are larger, thus letting you get further away from the heat and fire when you lift it, and then we have our smaller ones that are easy to pack and store (usually fitting inside the dutch oven itself).  Dutch oven lifters come in a lot of different styles.  If you're obsessed with feeling a bit “mountain man,” then classic cast iron versions are available.

These lid lifters also work to lift your dutch oven itself in many cases (thus, they are called dutch oven lifters, and not just lid lifters).  You want to be sure to get a version that is sturdy enough that it can successfully lift the dutch oven without the risk of slipping off, being thrown off balance, and so on.
