14” Dutch Ovens
14” Dutch ovens are a little larger than the 12” Dutch ovens; therefore, they can fit a little bit more food in them without adding on too much weight. The size of Dutch ovens is deceiving. When you open the lid, it might seem like it can fit a lot less than it really can. With normal pots and pans, people add more and more food to the mixture until it’s up to the top of the rim. In Dutch ovens, you can’t do this every time because a Dutch oven that’s filled to capacity can carry a shocking amount of food. The smaller Dutch ovens can hold enough food to feed a very large group, so you can imagine how much one that’s the next biggest size can hold.
When you’re looking for Dutch ovens, you should first determine how much food your group can eat on a regular basis. Look at each individually and picture the amount of food that can go in them. If you determine that your group can eat more, you should get a Dutch oven of a larger size. Don’t get one that’s too big because the last thing you would want is to make too much food. Wasting food is an easy thing to do when you’re dabbling in Dutch oven cooking. It’s better to be conservative in this situation. In the effort to impress the people you’re with, it’s understandable if you want to stack food upon food to create appetizing imagery. But food isn’t art. Food is food. Make only what you can eat. |
