12” Dutch ovens can contain a lot of food.  You aren’t going to be able to cook nearly as much as you would in a larger Dutch oven, but unless you’re cooking enough food to feed an army, a 12” Dutch oven should be sufficient for whatever you’re trying to do.  If you need to get a larger Dutch oven, finding Dutch ovens in larger sizes isn’t the most difficult process.  You have to look at it from the prospective that even the smallest Dutch ovens can carry enough food to feed a large group of people, so if your family isn’t too large, you would be better suited with 12” Dutch ovens than ones in the bigger sizes.
You also have to consider how big 12 inches is.  It’s larger than most conventional cooking vessels in the home and it’s a lot taller than them too.  Therefore, it can fit even more food than what you will be able to cook in a normal pot, even if the normal pot seems wider or taller than the Dutch oven.  Luckily, people who are familiar with Dutch oven cooking are smart enough to know they don’t need the biggest one on the market.  12” Dutch ovens are more common in camping stores than any other because people buy more of them due to their manageable size.
